The Regional Community Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific (RECOFTC) offers a range of international training courses and study tours on community based natural resource management topics. The courses and study tours build upon the experience of participants' and then extends their skills and knowledge by exploring the issues at hand through case study exploration and analysis, field visits to sites highlighting on-ground realities, presentations by invited specialists, and the development of personalized 'action plans'. This powerful mix of information will be presented within a highly interactive, participatory learning environment of discussion, synthesis and reflection. RECOFTC has a new approach to training for the upcoming year. In 2007, training and study tours will be delivered on demand, and customized for clients’ needs, rather than the former open subscription system. Reduced Impact Logging (RIL). Forestry Training Centre Inc., Guyana. The idea is to introduce the concept of RIL in a holistic manner and one effective way of doing this is by exposing the decision makers to RIL demonstrations in the forest. The short course is offered upon request and recent experience with the course indicates that the meeting of officers from the national forest authorities and field managers from the logging companies in a forest setting is extremely fruitful. RIL usually triggers passionate discussions: for example, whether RIL is practical and whether it may be viable under the specific local conditions. It emerged that the discussions on the merits and practicality of RIL, under forest conditions, create ideal conditions for participants’ understanding of RIL concepts. Topics that are normally discussed in offices for hours are easier to manage when discussed under actual forest conditions. In addition to the technical aspects, discussions between the forest authorities and those who work in the forest promote a shared understanding of practical forest management. For more information on this particular course as well as another 16 courses and training manuals, please contact the management of the Forest Training Centre Inc: Peter van der Hout: <pvdhout(a)guyana.net.gy> or Godfrey Marshall: <gemar(a)guyana.net.gy>.
