January 2011. IASC 2011 - Sustaining Commons: Sustaining our Future.
Hyderabad, India. The 13th Biennial Conference of the
International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) will be
held in South Asia for the first time; and in a departure from the
past, will be hosted by a practitioner organization - Foundation for
Ecological Security (FES). The Conference provides a unique opportunity
to resurface the discussion and debate on Commons and bring experience
and evidence from across the world to show that Commons are not a relic
of the past, but play a strategic role in maintaining ecological
health, reducing poverty, and improving collective action. By placing
the Conference agenda in the ongoing discussions around conservation,
local governance, social exclusion and human rights, agrarian distress
and rural livelihoods, and by pitching it at the interface of policy,
research and practice, the aim is to bring practitioners, scholars and
decision makers to a common meeting ground so as to enrich the
collective understanding on common property resources and identify
areas and measures to inform policy and programmatic action as well as
guide future research. Web page: <http://iasc2011.fes.org.in/>.

10-19 January 2011. Conservation Conflict
Resolution. Graduate and Professional Training Course. Front Royal,
Virginia, USA. Held at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology
Institute, Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies
Programs.Conservation Conflict Resolution, an intensive experiential
training, is a must for anyone addressing conservation conflicts,
whether these are conflicts between people and wildlife or between
people about wildlife or other natural resources. To reach conservation
goals more effectively, we need to better analyze conflict dynamics,
anticipate arising conflicts, and reconcile old conflicts that may
impede new progress. We also need to understand how struggles about
identity, status, and group recognition affect conservation conflicts.
Process is critical. By accurately analyzing conflicts to determine
their root causes and then facilitate appropriate resolution processes,
we can foster trust and respect among stakeholders and ensure
sustainable conservation solutions. Designed and led by the co-founders
of the Human-Wildlife Conflict Collaboration (HWCC), a leading
organization in conflict resolution capacity building
(humanwildlifeconflict.org), the course teaches proven skills,
strategies, and processes for effectively addressing
conservation-related conflict, including: using practical models and
tools for conducting analysis of deep-rooted conflict; designing
intervention processes for real-life conflict prevention and
reconciliation plans; understanding the roles of identity and
neutrality in conflict transformation; and conflict-transforming
communication techniques. See www.conservationtraining.si.edu<http://www.conservationtraining.si.edu>

July 2011. Training Needs Assessment. Islamabad, Pakistan.
(2 days: 9.00am to 5.00pm). Training Needs Assessment (TNA) is an
essential activity for the training or any other development function.
TNA is an important step for the designing of any training programme.
To be efficient and effective, all training programs must start with a
needs assessment. The assessment begins with a need which can be
described as a gap between what is currently in place and what is
needed, now and in the future.
This two day training workshop on
Training Needs Assessment for Capacity-building is designed to increase
the participants’ knowledge and experience for understanding the
concept approaches and components of TNA. The training workshop is
designed for middle and senior level management, monitoring and
evaluation officials, project monitors, team leaders and volunteers,
who are directly or indirectly involved in capacity building projects,
or are expected to be engaged in such activities in future.
