Workshop: Natural Fibers - Their Role in the Carbon Economy. Seattle,
Washington, USA. The role of natural fibers in the carbon economy is
rapidly growing, both literally and figuratively. Those in control of the

17 April 2009. International
Implications of the Biofuels Industry - Social, Economic, and
Environmental Perspectives. North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA. E.S. King
Village Commons on Central Campus. Sponsored by the ISTF
Chapter at North Carolina State University. This symposium is hosted by the
NCSU Student chapter of International Society of Tropical Foresters. The
biofuels industry has been growing fast this past decade due to the
current indications that biofuels are a "green" way to reduce dependency
on unsustainable fossil fuels. As with other new technologies and
approaches, however, weighing the benefits and the costs is important to
gain a better understanding of its possible impacts. What are the
potential impacts on consumers, landowners, markets, and the environment
when we trade one fuel source for others? Registration at:
http://clubs.ncsu.edu/istf/symposium09/registration_09.html
This symposium will give you the
opportunity to discuss these issues as you hear from:
- International experts about global implications.
- Local practitioners about their experiences on-the-ground.
- Local and international policy-makers about future concerns and
directions.
- Other students, faculty, and professionals interested in environmental,
social, and economic issues.

Session Topic: Forest Farming in
Temperate Climates with Non-Timber Forest Products: Opportunities,
Challenges, and Solutions. Abstract: Non-timber forest products
(NTFPs) have long been collected for food, medicine, income and pleasure,
and play an important role in rural households. Some have well-established
domestic and international markets. Peoples from around the world have
been nurturing native plants found in their forest lands for these
products. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the
sustainability of these resources due to reduced habitat and possible
over-harvesting. Today, forest farming is promoted and recommended for
ecological and economic reasons, to provide alternative income sources
while conserving forested landscapes. This session will explore research
and extension activities that promote opportunities and address challenges
in producing NTFPs through forest farming in temperate climates.
Researchers and technology transfer agents working in temperate
environments around the world will benefit greatly from participation in
this session. Time Line: 30 October 2008 -- submit abstracts online
through the Congress website. Follow directions for submitting abstracts
found on the website. Please send copy of submission to both organizers of
this session; contact information: James L. Chamberlain, USDA Forest
