23-27 June 2008. Small-scale Rural Forest Use and Management: Global Policies versus Local Knowledge. Gérardmer, France.  First announcement: In many regions of the world, forest activities are carried out by rural population on collective lands and by individual farmers on agroforestry or farm forestry plots. These types of forest activities play an important role in sustaining rural communities. The management of the related wooded areas is usually based on traditional local knowledge which is particularly adapted to the ecological and socio-economic conditions of the area. The common feature of all these different practices is that they are carried out at a small-scale level, with adaptive management. The management of forests is however also influenced by broader regional, national and international policies. These ‘global’ policies present an abstract and even sometimes idealistic vision of the forests’ role in rural development, and may propose means and mechanisms which are not fitting to the real issues faced by rural communities in managing their forests. This conference will explore the important role of local knowledge in managing small-scale forests and the impacts or implications of broader ‘global’ policies on small-scale forestry. Further details of the topics of interest will be provided in the first call for papers.

Deadline for abstracts: 31 October 2007. For more information, see http://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-6/60000/61200/61201/activities/?L=1print%2Fpri

(3 weeks in Wageningen the Netherlands, 3 weeks in Kumasi, Ghana). To access more detailed information on the course go to:  <http://portals.wi.wur.nl/leadership/>. This course aims to provide mid career professionals in forestry, nature management and rural development, with an opportunity to reflect on their working methods and approaches and motivate them in developing challenging targets for quality improvements in participatory work approaches at their own individual level and for their organization. Within the context of decentralization of natural resources management practices, participants will critically analyze current trends in collaborative management practices and practice the application of tools, methods and skills, required to fulfill a pro-active leadership role within their working context. The course, including a one week fieldwork period, brings to life this so called "social learning" among stakeholders demonstrating that learning together around joint action, can be used as an effective force for sustainable resource management and equitable decision-making. Using the multi-stakeholders conceptual framework and reflecting on participants' own work experiences, an active learning environment is created, that is fun, stimulating and challenging.
