Brazil hits reforestation record

Between January and December of 2005, the Brazilian Annual Plantation Program registered reforestation of 553,000 hectares in Brazil. This is 60% more than the average registered between January and December of 2002. The government expected that, in the same period of 2006, around 600,000 hectares will be reforested.

The government identifies three main factors that had influenced the increase of reforestation. The first one is biggest, availability and easiness of access to created financing lines for those small and medium producers interested in reforesting its areas. In 2002  R$ 10 million had been destinedfor this sector-- R$ 2 million directed to medium and small producers specifically (1 US$= 2.2 Brazilian Real). In 2005, the total value increased to R$ 140 million, and the average parcel to small producers was R$ 50.7 million.

Another factor for the reforestation record was the implementation, in the beginning of 2003, of training programs and technical assistance to the small producers that had already benefited 10 thousand producers in 800 cities.
